Low-voltage licensing
Kansas
Kansas does NOT have a state-level low-voltage contractor license. Licensing is handled by cities - Wichita, Overland Park, Topeka, Kansas City KS each have their own registration. Kansas City KS notably requires licensing through the Unified Government Codes Administration. Johnson County (Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa) has reciprocal recognition across several suburbs but still requires separate registration.
Regulatory agency
Municipal level only - no state agency
Common pitfalls
Mistakes we see installers make when navigating Kansas licensing.
- No state license to obtain - check every municipality where you intend to work.
- Crossing from Kansas City KS into Kansas City MO requires separate licensing in both jurisdictions.
- Johnson County suburbs have a reciprocal arrangement but Topeka and Wichita are completely separate ecosystems with their own exams.
