Low-voltage licensing
Illinois
Illinois does not have a state-level low-voltage contractor license. Cities and counties license contractors locally, with Chicago having the strictest rules. Chicago requires a General Contractor's license registration plus, for specific scope, an Electrical Contractor License through the Department of Buildings. Suburban municipalities have varying requirements.

Common pitfalls
Mistakes we see installers make when navigating Illinois licensing.
- No state license to obtain - check every municipality where you intend to work.
- Chicago Electrical Contractor License requires a designated Supervising Electrician with 5+ years of experience.
- Many Cook County suburbs (Schaumburg, Naperville, Evanston) have their own contractor registration on top of Chicago's rules.
- Fire alarm work in Chicago requires registration with the Chicago Fire Department.
