Low-voltage licensing
District of Columbia
Washington DC requires electrical contractor licensing through the Department of Buildings (DOB), formerly DCRA. Master Electrician licensing is required at the individual level; the business operates under a Basic Business License (BBL) plus the qualifying Master's electrical license. Low-voltage work falls under the same classification as general electrical.

Common pitfalls
Mistakes we see installers make when navigating District of Columbia licensing.
- DC requires the individual Master Electrician license AND a Basic Business License (BBL) with Electrical Contractor endorsement.
- DC permitting is its own ecosystem - even within the Beltway, Maryland or Virginia licenses don't authorize work in DC.
- Biennial renewal with continuing education required.
